Greencastle Delivers CPOM to Atlantic Health

Large, New Jersey health system targets user acceptance for computerized provider order management (CPOM) system

MALVERN, Penn. — January 8, 2008 — Greencastle Consulting, a project management and consulting services firm focused on clinical transformation through healthcare information technology, today announced a collaboration with Atlantic Health, Morristown, N.J., to introduce computerized provider order management (CPOM) capabilities. Organization-wide, CPOM is expected to improve data integrity for enhanced patient safety and clinical process efficiency.

Greencastle is currently managing the implementation of Atlantic’s CPOM pilot at the Goryeb Children's Hospital of Morristown Memorial Hospital. This second stage of the CPOM implementation is a continuation of Greencastle’s previous work with Atlantic Health, and will consist of a phased roll-out of the CPOM capabilities to the entire Atlantic Health system. The system functionality will include physician order entry, updated clinician order entry including order tracking and management, remote physician order entry and clinical decision support and performance metrics analysis.

“Widespread adoption of this technology was very important to us. So we changed our approach and decided to bring in an objective, third-party expert,” says Linda Reed, RN, MBA, vice president and chief information officer at Atlantic Health. “We went with Greencastle because unlike many other consulting companies, there was a  high level of personal attention to project detail and a willingness to work in the trenches with our clinical and IT staff. We felt that Greencastle’s combination of standard methodologies and hands-on approach provided the best of both worlds.”

“After working with Greencastle, I’ve come to appreciate the role they play. I’m impressed with the quality of the work they’ve done,” says Walter Rosenfeld, M.D., chair of pediatrics at Atlantic Health. “We’ve been able to take a very structured approach. Greencastle’s team has listened, paid attention to detail, and done the analytical problem-solving necessary to keep us on track. I cannot imagine this project without them.”

The major components of the engagement include management of deliverables such as clinical process development, order set standardization, process integration with all ancillary units, and training. Optimizing physician, clinical staff and management engagement in the project has been critical to success. “All the staff here at Atlantic Health would agree that this is one of the best projects we’ve got going,” added Reed.

“This technology presents some difficult challenges for provider organizations,” says Jacob Kretzing, senior partner at Greencastle. “But Atlantic Health’s strong commitment and innovative thinking are proving to be keys to an implementation that’s widely accepted and that maximizes value. We have seen exceptional participation from physician champions, clinical leaders and attending physicians throughout the project.”
